Experience Europe 2015: London, Day 1

What? Rachel has a blog? Does she post on it ever? When did this happen?

You may be wondering how I was able to read your mind right off the bat.  Let me answer your questions before we move on: Yes, I do have a blog. I posted on it more frequently when I first began it many moons ago. But here we are.

For those who could not tell from my obsessive posting on instagram, I recently went on a mini-study abroad to Europe through the BYU-I Business and Communications program.  An email from the department mentioned it briefly, and I applied immediately.  I interviewed, worried, thought, prayed, worried some more, and got an email in the spring welcoming me to the tour.  Read more about that experience here.

So now, I'm going to share the stories, places, and people that are very dear to me now.  Starting with our first stop in LONDON.

After having excited small talk in the SLC airport with a bunch of strangers, we all boarded the planes that took us to the Heathrow airport, with a small detour in Minneapolis.

This was my first international flight, but it was kinda fun, because I actually wanted  to talk to the people I was sitting by the whole time.  And of course the airline provided really luxurious pillows and blankets. *coughcough*.  I enjoyed cheese tortelini for dinner, I enjoyed rough turbulance during my first airplane bathroom experience, and I enjoyed landing after many hours of sitting.

And thus we arrived in London! I stood in line through customs, quietly and happily freaked out about all of the languages and accents I was eavesdropping on, and continued talking to my soon-to-be best friends.

We had been told earlier that throughout this trip we would be chauffeured around by coach.  Our dear driver, Bart, is a jolly irish man who knows a lot about the United Kingdom and told us loads of good stories the whole time.  He picked us up from the airport and took us to our quarters for the next several days!

I'm sure I would have enjoyed the scenery, but I was asleep for most of the bus ride to our new home: The London Temple Housing site!  Because many many people in the UK travel far to go to the London Temple, they have several rooms (hostel-style) for people to stay in, and they graciously offered many for our use.

It was definitely cramped (6 girls, one toilet, one shower) but I had dream-team roomies and we talked and laughed SO much every day.

That first night, all 35(ish) of us went to the temple! It was a great experience and a wonderful way to start our travels.  I stayed behind afterward and snapped some pictures for y'all.

I slept incredibly well that night.  Every night, in fact, because I was so worn out from all the fun and adventures of the day.  Which was perfect.  Stay tuned to hear more!

-Rach
